Todd Capistrant, DO
Fairbanks, AK
Dr. Capistrant was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended Saint Thomas Academy, which is a military college prep high school. Most of his summers were spent at his family’s lake home in Amery, Wisconsin.
Dr. Capistrant graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS in biology, and then spent a year living in Ely, Minnesota, before attending medical school at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa (now Des Moines University). In addition to receiving his DO degree, he completed coursework to receive a master's degree in health care administration.
HIs internship and residency were completed at the University of Minnesota Family Practice Program at St. Joseph’s hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, before beginning work at Baldwin Area Medical Center in Baldwin, Wisconsin. During this time, he and his wife began running and racing sled dogs. In 2003, this prompted the Capistrants to move to Alaska with their daughters, Rose and Grace (then three and one).
Dr. Capistrant worked for a couple of years at the Fairbanks Urgent Care Center, before taking his current position with the Tanana Valley Clinic, First Care in Fairbanks. In addition to treating patients, he is the director of First Care, assistant medical director, and serves on the board of directors for the clinic.
His family lives on a small farm near Healy, Alaska. They enjoy raising dairy goats, chickens, pigs, and honeybees. They still run dogs although the runners are now more often occupied by Rose and Grace (now eleven and nine). Dr. Capistrant enjoys hunting and fishing and has been blessed this last year in taking the family along on these activities. The Capistrants also spend as much time as possible exploring their extended backyard, Denali National Park.
